For the first time in the history of Oscars and Asian film maker has won the award of the ‘Best Director’ category. Director Ang Lee of Taiwanese origin created one of the most spectacular movies of this year. The renowned film ‘life of pie’ based on the bestselling book of the same name by Yann Martel was released last year. Experts had speculated it to be the most impossible story to be turned into a movie. But Ang Lee took up the challenge and even won. ‘Life of pie’ won 4 Academy Awards.
The proclaimed director is best known for his out of the box themes and the go getter attitude which reflects in his films. The director has successfully garnered recognition in both the west and his native land. With well known movies like Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hulk, Ride with the Devil, Sense & Sensibility; he is definitely one of the ace Hollywood film makers of Asian origin today.
The initial stage of his career was spent in the Taiwanese movie industry. From a humble start to successful Hollywood director has not much changed him as a person and is still much grounded to his roots. He supports many philanthropic causes such as actor Jet Li’s charitable organization, “One Foundation” and universal human rights. He has also given a speech at the Human Rights Campaign Gala organized in 2007.
Being born in Taiwan to a middle class family, Lee was finely educated and acquired mastery of Chinese Literature. It was this understanding of strong cultural roots that helped him in completing his bachelor’s degree in theater from the prestigious University of Illinois. It is here that his filmy journey truly began.
The JTTJ team wishes Ang Lee on his remarkable achievement and future success.
