Known as ‘Elephas Maximus’ by their scientific name. Asian elephant is the only living species of Elephas that still exists. They are the largest land animals in Asia but smallest species of elephant. Asian elephants are smaller as Compared to African elephants.
Body length of Asian Elephant is about 11 feet and they weigh between 2.5 to 4.9 tons. Their life expectancy is about 60-70 years. These enormous elephants have thick brown or black skin. Tusk of these elephant is about 6 feet long. As per IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Asian elephant is an endangered animal and their population has dipped in about 50%. Gestation period of Asian elephant is about 20-22 weeks.
Distribution: Asian elephants live in groups. Major distribution includes India, Sri Lanka and Island of Sumatra.
Habitat: These elephants are habitats of tropical forests, moist green lowland, teak forests and of the high altitude cooler mountains. As per the massive size of this animal they require bigger space, where they can freely move around and find varieties of food.
Diet: Grasses, leaves, woody parts of the trees, fruits, farm crops and many other types of vegetation.
