Won’t it be nice if humans also practiced gender equality like the animals? Humans might be the most advanced and developed creature, but it still leaves a lot of room for us to learn the basics from these supposedly unintelligent animals. Man has not only imposed his superiority on the animal kingdom but also on his better half or equivalent, ‘the women’. This year the Khao Kheow Open Zoo of Thailand urges our societies to take up the cause of gender equality on the occasion of International Women’s Day, that is celebrated on 8th of March every year.
Women have faced oppression and inequality for very long throughout the world. This had lead to such an upsurge amongst women all over the globe to voice themselves and actively become feminist. This gave birth to the idea of celebrating Women’s Day. The day empowered women to demand equality to men in the form of rights like right to vote and to hold public office, protest against employment sex discrimination and campaign against the war and to express women’s solidarity.
The 1st national Women’s Day was celebrated in USA in 1909 after a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. But the idea to make it international was of Clara Zetkin (Leader of the ‘Women’s Office’ for the Social Democratic Party in Germany.
Zetkin emphasized that every country across the globe should annually celebrate – International Women’s Day- which will give women the power to press for their demands. She placed this idea in the general meeting of the Socialist Second International in Copenhagen in August 1910.
The conference was attended by over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, working women’s clubs, and including the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament. They all welcomed Zetkin’s suggestion with unanimous approval and hence International Women’s Day came to existence.
Hence this International Women’s Day, treat the women in your life with a fun and relaxing day at Khao Kheow open zoo. Make this Women’s Day a special memory of their life. JTTJ team wishes all the women who so selflessly strive for their families and raise the society a happy and fulfilling Women’s Day.
